My name is Kara de Rooij and I am the person behind Kaia Natural Watercolor. After painting or 10 years I grew more and more uncomfortable with synthetic paints. I wanted to buy eco friendly paint, but didn’t find what I was looking for. In my search for an alternative for synthetic paints, I learned about natural pigments and a new love was born! I decided to start Kaia Natural Watercolor, so that you can now paint in a way that's in harmony with people, animals and the environment as well. After sampling over a hundred different pigments, I made a color selection and developed a bespoke recipe for every pigment. In this process I collaborated with several artists, who gave me feedback so that I could make the best possible paint and the most beautiful colors. Figuring out how to produce natural paint has been a lot like reinventing the wheel at times and I've had to come to accept that not everything is going to be perfect rightaway and that things always play out different than what I imagined. And all watercolorists know that that is what watercolor teaches us anyway!
What does Kaia mean?
Kaia means earth and I strive to make my whole business as sustainable as possible. For example: I use biodregadable pipingbags to pipe the paint into the pans, I have my business account at a sustainable bank and I use a green webhost.
